Risk Management

RISK MANAGEMENT

Risk Management

A risk is any condition which may result in human, physical or financial loss to our guests, our employees or the Company. Risk Management is the effort to reduce or eliminate these conditions.

Due to the nature of our business, we are exposed to a high level of risk. Effective Risk Management is essential to the success of Cypress Mountain and the safety of our Team.

What to Look For

As Cypress team members, it is our responsibility to recognize and act on any potential risk, whether in our own work area or otherwise.  The conditions that create the most risk are those that expose our guests and employees to physical injury. Some of the more common hazards to watch for are:

  • Icy steps, doorways and walkways

  • Reckless or impaired skiers, riders and/or drivers

  • Skis without brakes or straps

  • Signs or fences missing, broken, fallen over or snow covered

  • Toboggans in the Downhill area or non-designate areas in the Nordic area

  • Fire Hazards, including: Flammable items near heaters, propane stored near a heat source, improper use of extension cords, blocked emergency exits, uncharged fire extinguisher

What to Do

When you see ANY condition you believe to be hazardous, correct the problem immediately if possible, and report it to your Supervisor or Manager. If you must leave a hazard unattended, whenever possible, mark it as a warning to others. If a guest reports a hazard to you, determine the exact location and nature of the problem and immediately correct or report it to your Supervisor or Manager.

For any Incident, Injury or Near Miss, please see the flowchart below and link underneath to report it:

Accidents

If you witness an accident, it is imperative that you perform the following procedures:

Mark the accident above the site as a warning to others. If in the ski area, use crossed skis. If on the road, put on emergency flashers. Report the accident to the Cypress Base/Dispatch office by the fastest possible method (ext 4444 or channel 1) . Cypress Base will call the Ski Patrol and/or any other applicable emergency services.

  • On Downhill Ski Runs – report to the nearest lift operator or the Guest Services Office

  • On Nordic Trails - report to the Nordic Ticket Office or Hollyburn Lodge

  • On the Road – use the nearest phone/radio/cell phone

DO NOT leave an injured person unattended. If you are the first to arrive at the scene of an accident, ask the next person to report the accident and have that person return to you immediately after doing so to confirm that it has been done. Stay with the injured person until the Ski Patrol or emergency services arrive.
DO NOT move the injured person or administer any first aid unless you have been formally trained in first aid and feel competent in what to do. If the situation is a life threatening emergency, you must use your best judgement to decide if and how you will intervene to save a life. Try to identify any potential witnesses and have them remain on scene until patrol arrives and can speak to them.

Missing Persons

If a guest reports a missing person to you, immediately report it to your Supervisor. If your Supervisor or Manager is not available, personally escort the person to the Guest Services or the Cypress Base office immediately. Do not attempt to deal with the situation yourself and do not make any judgements as to the validity of the report. ALL missing person reports must be reported.

All team members that are expected to participate in an emergency response will be trained to do so.  In the event of an emergency situation you should follow the direction of Cypress Base and your Supervisor/Manager. If you are required to leave the building you should go to the nearest muster station
